World Renewable Energy Day

Renewable energy sources have shown significant resilience in the midst of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, giving them a dominant and irreplaceable role. It has accelerated the energy transition based on domestic renewable resources. Their importance has been further confirmed after the beginning of the war in Ukraine. The energy crisis motivated countries to realize that they can and must rely on their own production of electricity from renewable sources to become closer to energy self-sufficiency and therefore more resilient to future crises. Today, World Renewable Energy Day is an occasion for a reminder of this.

World Renewable Energy Day is celebrated every year on April 26, the day of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, with the aim of raising awareness of the need for research and implementation of renewable energy sources – wind, sun, water, biomass, geothermal sources.

The natural potential of renewable energy sources in Croatia is extremely large and is a significant basis for even regional development. Renewable energy unites with the European goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. It is an integral part of the Green Deal, the National Climate and Energy Plan, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as the European Commission’s RePowerEU Plan. All of the above is an opportunity, but also an obligation for responsible and more efficient use of renewable energy sources and to achieve the benefits that they bring not only to the energy sector but to the entire economy.
