Conference on the Potential of Agrivoltaic Power Plants in Osijek

The Renewable Energy Sources of Croatia, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences in Osijek, are organizing a conference in February 2024 on the topic “Opportunities for the Application of Agrivoltaics in Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Croatia.”

After presenting the Study on the Potential of Solar Energy Use in the Agriculture and Freshwater Aquaculture Sector in Zagreb this September, it’s time to introduce the agrivoltaic power plant system to the people of Slavonia.

The study, among other things, showed that permanent plantations, especially viticulture and fruit growing, are most suitable for the application of agrivoltaic power plants. The key advantage of agrivoltaics is that it is an agronomic measure aimed at protecting plantations from weather disasters like hail or strong wind, while also providing a secure income for farmers. Given that Slavonia is our largest agricultural region and is almost as sun-drenched as coastal Croatia, the great interest in agrivoltaic power plants is not surprising.

The conference will be held in the council hall of the Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences in Osijek on February 1, 2024, starting at 9:00 AM. Along with the experts who conducted the study, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development will participate to address any uncertainties farmers have about the utility and legal regulations of agrivoltaic power plants.

The event includes a networking lunch and a tour of the BELJE Winery with wine tasting.

Participation is free, but due to limited spaces, attendees must confirm their presence via email at info@oie.hr by January 26, 2024.

The study was initiated by the Croatian Renewable Energy Sources (OIEH) with funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture from Zagreb, the Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences from Osijek, and the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation from Split.

Croatia is abundant in sunshine and fertile land. These two natural resources now need to be united in energy production.
